● About the treatment

WHat is it

Anti-wrinkle injections (also known as anti ageing injections or Botox) can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. They help relax muscles preventing skin from creasing and causing wrinkles. It is most effective for treating expression lines, such as frowns lines, surprise lines on the forehead, and crow’s feet around the eyes.

Frown lines, crows feet, forehead lines

As a result of ageing skin, crow’s feet, forehead lines and frown lines all eventually develop. Crow’s feet (also known as laugh lines) are the given name for the lines around the outer corner of your eye. They usually start to develop from around the early 30s. Forehead lines can be both horizontal and vertical on the forehead. Frown lines (also known as the 11s), are the lines that form between the eyebrows on the forehead.

Bunny Lines

Bunny lines are diagonal and vertical wrinkles that appear on the bridge of the nose and on either side of the nose with repeated contractions (squinting and laughing) of the nasalis muscle.

Bunny lines can also be the sign the frown area has already been treated with anti-wrinkle treatment due to the compensatory movement after the treatment so if you are prone to developing these lines it can be beneficial treating bunny lines and frown lines at the same time.

Small doses of anti-wrinkle treatment are injected into the muscle on the nose sidewalls.

Masseter reduction/feminising the jaw line

Jawline slimming is achieved by injecting product into the masseter muscle (the chewing muscle), and can reduce the appearance of a wide jaw.

Eyebrow lift

Botox into the three brow depressor muscles (or muscles that function to pull the brow down) can create a 2-3mm lift of the eyebrows. This is great for patients with “deep set” eyes or those with “hooded eyes.”

Contraindicated:
  • Pregnant/ Breast feeding.
  • Allergy to albumin or egg.
  • Neuromuscular disorders (e.g. myasthenia gravis).
  • Muscle paralysing effect may be increased by antibiotics and medications: tetracycline, lincomycin, gentamycin, spectomycin, muscle relaxants, anti-coagulants or bleeding disorders.

Pre-treatment:
  • If you are taking aspirin, NSAID’s, vitamin E, gingko biloba or St. John’s wort, your risk of bruising and bleeding is higher.
  • Avoid any type of aspirin products for up to one week PRIOR to the procedure and for a 1 week post procedure.
  • Sunburnt skin is difficult to treat so avoid exposure to the sun.
  • Avoid retinols and peels 48 hours pre and post procedure.
  • Try and avoid tea and coffee on the day and evening before, as it increases bruising.

On the day:
  • Try not to wear any make up on or around the areas to be injected – including eyebrows: this will be removed.
  • Immediately after the treatment, there may be mild swelling, which usually disappears after 30 mins.
  • Afterwards, the injection site can be slightly red for about one hour. In a small number of cases a bruise may occur.

Post-operative care:
  • Do not massage the treated area at all. If the area is washed, pat dry very gently with a soft towel.
  • Do not rub the treated area for 72 hours.
  • Do not bend excessively or lie down for at least 4 hours.
  • Do exercise the treated muscles by tensing them and relaxing them for the first hour after treatment.
  • Avoid going to the gym or strenuous exercise for 24 hours.
  • Botulinum Toxin takes from 2 to 14 days to become effective. This is dependent on the strength of the muscles injected and the individual response.
  • Use mineral make up, if required, within the first 24 hours.
  • Avoid alcohol for 4-6 hours.

Risks and side effect:
  • Headache, nausea and flu-like symptoms.
  • In very rare cases patients may also develop antibodies or allergies to the toxin, experience double-vision and watering eyes.
  • For treatment of the upper face, such as frown and forehead, there is a very low risk of brow ptosis (drooping of the eyebrow) or eyelid ptosis (drooping of the eyelid), which completely reverses with time.
